Need a market tip? A hot stock? Here are three UB students you’ll want to keep in mind. Their stock is going off the charts since they made their mark by winning the Connecticut Stock Market Game in May.
The trio – Sakib Z. Kadri, a first semester MBA student from India, Cheng (Amy) Shen, a “veteran” MBA student from China, and Ellen H. Shindika, a first semester MBA student from Tanzania – won the game, taking the post-secondary division. The team was sponsored by the Connecticut Post, the newspaper serving much of southern Connecticut.
They are students in Steven M. Rashba’s Business English class, an MBA prerequisites course for international students. Rashba, an instructor, was also their adviser in the Stock Market Game.
The UB team began the “game” on Feb. 23 with $100,000 to invest. Its objective was to learn about the market with a hands-on tool and to gain experience in researching stocks and the market. A secondary objective was to outperform the market. UB sure did.
“We invested heavily in blue-chip stocks. We also took
advantage of interest rate forecasts by “investing” in the insurance/financial
services industry,” Rashba said.
Rashba, who’s been teaching at UB for more than six years, said the students are quick learners and very adept at what their doing. He said he’s no “expert” on the market. “My background is in languages and business,” he said. (He has a MBA, a Professional Certificate in Risk Management and Risk Financing and 15 years of business experience.) But stocks are not totally alien to him. “My most recent position in business was as marketing vice president of a local investment firm, and this ‘real world’ experience helped me advise the students.
