A majority of the students who used the services of the Academic Resource Center again earned a 2.0 or higher grade point average during the 2003-2004 academic year. Each year the majority increases; this time it was 77%. Does this mean that students who visit the ARC earn better grades? Maybe they know the secret – the secret that starting early, discussing the assignment with someone, and getting help improve their chances for academic success. While we cannot take complete credit for that success, we know that a partnership between students and the ARC is beneficial. The Academic Resource Center, located on the fifth floor of Wahlstrom Library, offers free peer tutoring (and a breathtaking view of Long Island Sound) to University of Bridgeport students. While most clients come to the ARC for general writing and algebra assistance, we do offer tutoring in selected content areas. So far this year we have hired students with majors in biology, world religions, computer science, and business. Although walk-in clients can usually be accommodated, the best way to ensure that you will be seen is to call 576-4290 and make an appointment for a tutoring session. The sessions last for one hour. When calling, tell the receptionist the course and the type of help you want, for example, writing a paper, review for a quiz, or math practice.
The ARC is staffed by peer tutors and learning specialists who are also adjunct professors here at the University. All tutors must show proficiency in the subjects tutored, be recommended by a professor, maintain an overall 3.0 GPA with an “A” in the subject tutored, and participate in ongoing training.
The motto of the Academic Resource Center is “We Help You Help Yourself.” That means that instead of giving you the answer to that algebra problem or creating that thesis statement or even summarizing the chapter or book, your tutor introduces you to strategies to help you find the answers yourself. We offer guided assistance to help you become the best student you can be.
In addition to onsite tutoring, the ARC is again offering online tutoring through a program sponsored by the Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium. University of Bridgeport is one of fifteen Connecticut colleges participating in the program wherein we share the tutoring resources in writing, math up to calculus, statistics and accounting. In most cases there is 24-hour turnaround. Online tutoring runs from September 13 to December 17. To access and register for online tutoring, visit www.etutoring.org. More information is forthcoming in the Academic Resource Center newsletter that will be distributed later in the week.
The Academic Resource Center is open from 8:30 am to 6 pm Monday through Thursday and 8:30 am to 1 pm on Friday. During final exam week, we are open from 8:30 to 4:30. For more information, please visit our web site at www.bridgeport.edu/arc or just stop by to get acquainted.
