The University of Bridgeport Purple Knights Softball team clinched a berth in the NYCAC playoffs on Tuesday when they split a doubleheader with top of the conference Adelphi University. The Knights won the first game 4-1 with Dawn Clasen picking up her eleventh win of the season. Correy Hansen hit a home run, a two run blast to center field, her third in her last six games. Clasen added her first home run of the season in the seventh inning as the Knights defeated the panthers. This game was the second time in as many that the Knights knocked off the top team in the NYCAC. On Sunday, April 24 the Knights beat the NYCAC number one C.W. Post 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader to knock them out of first place to Adelphi. The Knights dropped the second game of the doubleheader 2-3.
The Knights finish the regular season 24-18 (13-11 in NYCAC) for their first 20 win season in a decade. This is head coach Valerie Steen’s first season as head coach of the team and both she and first year assistant Courtney Hibbard are excited at the prospect of post-season play. The Knights go into the post-season on a roll as they have won 11 of their last 16 games. Team expectations are high as they prepare for the additional games. Freshman Nicole Composto says “It has been a good season, and we are working hard to excel in playoffs.” Sophomore Lauren DeCarlo echoes the sentiment. “We have talented bunch and the NYCAC should look out for some more upsets in the playoffs.”
