The Student Government Association elections were held on campus on April 20, and 21, 2004. The idea is, that students should familiarize them selves with the voting privileges, choose their representative, and hope that he/she does the job responsibly to benefit the whole community.
Unfortunately only 29 students voted. Our undergraduate student body averages at about 1500 students. This would mean that 1.9 percent of enrolled students actually took initiative to decide who their student representatives will be. Elected students, apart from managing 67000 dollar annual budget, have voting privileges in the University Senate.
There are 25 positions in SGA. Student ran for only 8. So who is to blame? There are a couple factors that could account for such a shameful turn out. The advertising of the elections was very poor. Very few students knew what was going on, when was going on, or even who was running. Not so long ago one would see a number of posters advertising the election day, and more that plenty of posters campaigning for a certain position. Some would even go from room to room to try and persuade students that they were the right candidates for the desired position. Well not this year.
One saw very few posters around campus announcing the Election Day and that’s it. SGA did a number of wonderful things but not making sure their successors are there.
However we do have about a quarter of the needed staff, that were elected by those 29 students voting. Congratulations to them.
