On Tuesday, April 19th, the International Awareness Club hosted an Inter Club Quiz Night at the Student Center. The event brought together five different clubs to compete for the first place prize of a Famous Pizza gift certificate. Although the main focus of the host club, IAC, is bringing awareness of international affairs to students, the trivia questions included a well-rounded range of categories including Sports, International Politics, UB History, and Entertainment. Clubs in attendance included the Student Government Association, Scuba, African Club, Black Student Alliance and IAC, who worked in their respective teams of 35 members to answer correctly the 10 questions in each category . Each team was given an answer sheet with multiple choices and given a time limit to choose the correct answer as IAC club president, Sana Sarr, read aloud each question in intervals of 15 seconds. Questions ranged from identifying which country has never had a female prime minister to naming the actor who played Legolas in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy-which prompted an excited cheer from Orlando Bloom fans among the crowd.
By the end of the four rounds, scores were tallied and IAC won by a point with SGA in second place. The night was meant as a fun gathering of clubs in friendly competition, as was apparent in the sound of people’s laughter and in the excited teamwork displayed by each club. Dr. Thomas Ward, IAC’s advisor, presented the prize of a $40 gift certificate to the winning club. Although only one club won the prize, it is fair to say that everyone walked away with a smile on his/her face and equipped with new trivia-who knew that Ringo Starr was not an original member of the Beatles and the president of Haiti was exiled in the Central African Republic?
