Wheeler Rec gets new equipment

Recently the student recreation center on campus has purchased new cardio equipment for those students who would rather run than lift weights.
The new room, located on the right when one walks in, has three treadmills, two bikes, and one cross trainer also called and elliptical. Students must sign up to use these machines at the front desk. Use of any machine is regulated to thirty minutes to give everyone a chance to work out.
Once a student has used any one machine for a half hour he/she may not sign up again to use the equipment. The Rec Center cannot allow people to use them repetitively in case of unknown health problems that could occur or worsen due to overexertion.
The cardio room is a small space with no ventilation, so it can get very warm when there are five people working out. Remember to bring lots of water and a towel to wipe down equipment after use. The center is thinking of ways to vent the room such as putting in a window, but money has been an issue throughout the discussions.
Wheeler has also provided three televisions for use while exercising. Again, because of the small space students must be respectful of others when choosing what to watch and how loud to listen to it. There is only one remote control for all three televisions.
Student Basil George commented that, “They are excellent machines [however] the TV’s are the best part.”
Wheeler hopes with these new options for exercise that more students will work out on a regular basis. As senior Mia Garcia points out, “Not everyone is interested in purely weights and some don’t feel safe walking off campus. With the addition of these aerobic machines, students now have a place to go work out more comfortably.”
The Recreation Center is open from 6:30am to 10pm Monday thru Friday and from noon to 5pm on weekends. The busiest time is usually later in the evening. During early and mid-morning students can have the place mostly to themselves.
