SGA President’s Letter

Dear Students of UB:First of all, I would like to thank all the students who were concerned enough to discuss and collaborate with their student representatives to solve problems on campus. We appreciate students’ ownership over their school and education, and we are here to help.
Last semester’s work involved many meetings and plans, but we did bring to you the Foam Party, Spirit Week, and the Toga Party. We took a trip to Boston and New York to see the Rockettes. The Financial Committee made a controversial move in financial policy that spurred the clubs to heated debate.
Our two focuses this semester were to increase communications and funds for the Bowling Alley.
Towards communications, we developed the idea of UBBC, a SGA-run televised program of about 10 minutes on a bi-weekly basis, to be aired in the dorms, Knight’s End and other areas of high traffic. We have completed editing the first videotape of events on campus and plan to air it soon.
While the primary objective is to inform students about campus life, we also hope to use the material for an annual video yearbook. (To join this project as an anchor, reporter, cameraperson, or editor, please contact the office at X4818.)
As far as funding the bowling alley, we’ve initiated the “Serve Now, Bowl Later” project through House clubs, which have volunteered to commit themselves to hours of service exchanged for corporate sponsorship. About 17 service projects have been scheduled this semester. At the rate of seven dollars per hour, the completion of this project is dependant upon how fast the House members and any other UB members can fulfill a total of 10,000 service hours, in order to raise the $70,000 we need. Clubs have begun counting hours with the aid of Service for Peace. (To join in this project, see below)
In last year’s SGA survey, UB students requested more and varied entertainment activities. Our Events and Escape Committees held the following: a Karaoke Night, a weekend ski-trip in Vermont, an ice skating afternoon at Wonderland on Ice, and trips to the cinemas, and a Spring Break trip to Boston. The Escape Committee invited BiTrip to perform at Merten’s Theater, which attracted a large UB and greater Bridgeport audience.
We’ve just completed our annual survey (if you haven’t taken it and still want to, see contact info below), and recently acquired a van for a shuttle system. Your Speaker, Kimikami Miyake is planning to set up the shuttle to run during prime hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday each week to Trumbull, People’s Bank, Stop and Shop and other key locations. Arcade X renovations are underway and Sarah Osborne has thrown a smashing Wisteria, with the Booze Cruise coming up.
Our Joint Congress, Senate and House meetings are open and we extend an invitation to all students to come at 9pm on Wednesdays to the Private Dining Room of the Student Center.
Upcoming events/projects include Casino Night (April 17), Hawaiian Luau at the beach (last day of classes, April 30), further constitutional updates, and continuing plans for the set-up of a more functional bridgeport.edu mass email system. We are obviously having difficulty with our website, and hopefully our international college senators will be able to update us soon on their efforts towards that goal.
Meanwhile, it is good to see that the Scribe is up again.
Thank you for your support. Elections are April 21: don’t forget to vote!
As always, we would like to hear from you, and welcome you to call us with comments, questions, and suggestions.
