On Friday evening at nine o’clock, the RHA, Residence Hall Association, put together the Sex Ed Party. The posted advertisements for the event simply said “Sex Ed: Free Condoms and Free Lube.” At first a prospective attendee might think the party was just a party, with Sex Ed as a theme. Thus providing free lube and condoms would be fitting for such a theme. Upon arrival, however, an attendee would encounter a table set up with information on STD’s and a jar filled with Life Style brand condoms. The providing of information on different STD’s along with pamphlets on how to use a condom are not altogether unwarranted since the incidence of STD’s in this country has been on the rise continuously for many years now, especially among high school and college students.
The party that was supposed to start at nine pm suffered from technical difficulties and therefore it did not get underway until almost eleven pm. Faced with this predicament, the option of a student was to either leave or stay around until the party was started. A few students chose to hang about. There is nothing like polishing your game of ping-pong or sipping on a coffee and nibbling on cheese cake at The Twisted Caf. Others chose a different route and instead hung around the lobby area talking with friends or watching a basketball game.
Be this as it may, the party eventually started. Though the party finally chose a time to begin, students did not begin to show themselves until about eleven-thirty. Still more trickled in during the time afterward. Even though there were students who showed, there were not enough to make a complete party. This was no fault to the party itself. It was Good Friday and the weekend before Easter. Many students took this opportunity to go home to visit friends and family.
Just because the Sex Ed party did not have a large turn out does not mean that it was not a success. There are many times when living on campus can easily bore a student. Most do not have cars and still others are underage and unable to party at clubs. The Sex Ed party was a good alternative for those who did not go home for Easter. A couple of students, when asked what they thought of the party, said the party was very enjoyable. In the bargain, students were able to pick up free information on a very serious threat to college students and free condoms. It was perfect since going to a party and meeting people might lead to such a situation when the use of condoms would be appropriate. This, combined with awesome music provided by a talented DJ, made for a good party and leaves one in hope for Sex Ed: Part II.
