Another year is rapidly coming to an end at the University of Bridgeport. This makes most of us very, very happy. End of the year means graduation, spring time, summer time, and a well deserved break to us all from the daily grind; but this end also means it is time to evaluate our past year. A big part of our past year is our Student Government also known as SGA.
Michelle Brown is a sophomore at the university. She is also a transfer student. When asked, “How do you feel about Student Government?” she stated that she “wished they [student government] could do more. This school seems so out of place.” She has not been to any of the student government events. When asked how could they improve she promptly replied, “They can make themselves known to the student body.” She at one point questioned if we had a student government. OUCH!!
Seju Mike is a freshman who was also subjected to this questionnaire. Her response was a little different. Seju said such things like the student government “is a good way for people to have the opportunity to help the organization run.”This is another point of view. She has only been to one party. It was a “UB party. “This was her response to it. When asked if Student Government was doing its job, she responded, “It is a good way for students to get involved but I haven’t seen anything that has affected me as a student.”
Now moving onto the flip side of the issue. Your humble reporter also made the effort to speak to Student Government. Valerie DeClerico is a junior. She is also the co-senator of Arts and Sciences. This is her third year being involved in Student Government. She stated this about student government, “This year was the best year. Most of the people were dedicated and willing to do things. They were motivated. There was really well thrown parties and events. ” She also stated that there is a “need for more people and students to get involved. “This is too true. Valerie thinks the student government is doing their jobs “to the best of their ability.”
Last, but certainly not in anyway least important, student government has a lack of communication. According to Tamamai Kawamura, student government has “a really good team. It has done a lot but there has been a communication gap. There needs to be a better communication with the Scribe and ‘UBBC’. She explained that due to a lack of communication ‘a lot of students didn’t know how to get involved and (the UBBC) needs different types of people. People don’t think that things are going on.”
Bet you all are wondering what Student Government has done this year. Well, here it is: Foam Party, Toga Party, an activities fair, the future Casino Night, Trips for skiing in Vermont, Midnight in Manhattan, movies, and ice skating. Student Government is even attempting to get a shuttle system put into place. This would be for our convenience.
The moral of this article: Well, the moral of this article is, get out there people. Do something!! Your government needs you. If you are graduating, it is not too late. Help out with something. If you will be a returning student, run for government and make a difference with your tuition money.
