During the 2002-2003 academic year, 68% of the students who used the services of the Academic Resource Center earned a 2.0 or higher grade point average. What does that mean? Maybe nothing. Or it could mean that those students having academic difficulty or wanting some reinforcement have a good chance of having those needs successfully met at the ARC.The Academic Resource Center, which is beginning its tenth year of operation, offers free peer tutoring in selected subjects to University of Bridgeport students. It is located on the fifth floor of Wahlstrom Library and offers a beautiful location for independent studying in addition to quality tutoring.
How does a student go about making use of ARC services? The best way is to call 576-4290 and make an appointment for a tutoring session. The sessions last for one hour. When calling, tell the receptionist the course and the type of help you want, for example, writing a paper, review for a quiz, or math practice. If you are already in the library, you may just drop by to see if there is tutor available.
What can a student expect? The motto of the Academic Resource Center is, “We Help You Help Yourself.” That means that instead of giving you the answer to that algebra problem or creating that thesis statement or even summarizing the chapter or book, your tutor introduces you to strategies to help you find the answers yourself.
Who are the tutors and why should you trust their help? All tutors must show proficiency in the subjects tutored, be recommended by a professor, maintain an overall 3.0 GPA with an “A” in the subject tutored, and must participate in ongoing training.
The Academic Resource Center is open from 8:30 am to 6 pm Monday through Thursday and 8:30 am to 1 pm on Friday. For more information, you can link to the web page from University of Bridgeport home page by clicking on Campus Resources and then Academic Resource Center.
