I’m very pleased to be introduced to you as your undergraduate Student Government Association President. My name is Gabriella. Needless to say, but in effort to exact your attention to my pretty face on the front page, I’d like to announce the kindly Scribe editor’s insertion of my picture. You see, it is very important for you to know me, as well as your representatives. We’ll be putting up your Senators’ and Class representatives’ pictures in your schools and around campus soon, so that you’ll be reminded that we are here and willing to work with you and for you.The Student Government at UB acts according to what we perceive is the student body’s best interest. A finalized a draft of our major goals is due out at this Sunday’s Student Government Association Retreat. As of now, our goals are to improve student life through organizing more trips (Broadway, NYC, Ski, Apple-picking, Casino, etc), events (intercollegiate, academic and entertainment, such as the Foam Party, Iron Man between Sacred Heart and UB, Valentine’s Day Jukebox, UB Olympics), and better transportation (through the use of shuttle buses on the weekends).
Our major projects are the money-gorging prospects of the restoration of the bowling alley and a water fountain for the Ped Mall. For these, we have elected a professor from the Finance Department to be our advisor: Professor Wu.
One academic goal is to update you all on a number of internship opportunities and programs available for students during their winter and summer vacations, specific to their majors. An entertainment goal is to encourage more clubs to hold events by awarding the club(s) with the most popular/ unusual events with nice green gifts. We are also moving to change the current financial policies. Clubs allocating money from the SGA will be requested to pay back the expenses with the revenue from the event, but the clubs will not incur debt in the case that the expenses exceed the proceeds from the event. Money is limited, and there are already many requests that we improve weight rooms, basketball courts, and other facilities and services. We hope to keep you informed through the Scribe, and soon by the website that we are in the process of updating. To contact us, please review our office hours, or send an email to your choice of representatives.
Until next time, don’t be shy to come to our office (Student Center, second floor, Rm 231, X4818) with comments, suggestions, and/or volunteer hours. LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!!!
