To connect your computer in an Internet ready dorm on campus, you need three things; a working computer, an Ethernet card and an Ethernet cable. You can purchase the Ethernet card and cable at your local computer store. Once you have the Ethernet card installed and your Ethernet cable connected to the network outlet in your dorm room. You need to write down you MAC address (physical address) for you network card. Windows users can find this information by running “ipconfig /all” in their command prompt. Then you will be able to fill out the form to activate your room’s internet connection and e-mail. At this point you will have the all the information necessary to fill out the dorm connection form located at www.bridgeport.edu/ubnet/. Here you must (If you have not already done so) set up your ubnet username and password. Once you have completed this step simply fill out the form for your internet connection. Protecting your computer from hackers, viruses and unauthorized access is simple; go to your local software retail store and purchase antivirus software and personal firewall software. This combination of programs will be able to protect your computer from the most common computer threats. But to take full advantage of this software and other products like them you need to update the software at least once a week. Also check www.windowsupdate.com for product updates that will help protect your computer from hackers that might try to exploit a security flaw in windows. And remember, update, update, update!

Is it just me, or is our campus dorm network weird. What’s up with not being able to directly connect to another computer in another dorm?
What is up with the 10Mbps network connections on campus, can’t we get some 100Mbps switches up here?
