Weather Finally Agrees With Softball

After waiting a little over three weeks to play their first game, the Lady Knight Softball team finally got their first games in for the 2003 campaign. On March 23, 2003, Bridgeport traveled to Dowling College to play their first regular season games of the year. Splitting the double header UB lost the first game 4-0 but came back to defeat their conference rivals 2-1 in game 2. Junior pitcher Brandi Sellers got the ball in the first game outside for the Lady Knights and gave up five hits and struck out two but had to watch her team make four errors on the day. Despite the poor play, UB hit the ball well having eight hits in their first game of the spring season.

UB came back in the second game with a little bit more behind them. Freshman pitcher Justina Kauffman started her first ever collegiate game and recorded the first win for the Lady Knights 2-1. Senior Nachele Adler went 2 for 3 and scored a run while Sellers and Stacey Koff had the two RBI’s to put UB ahead for their first win of the season. Junior Sarah Osborne scored the other run. Kaufmann gave up five hits and struck out six in her debut.

The next game for the Lady Knights will be on March 29 at Short Beach field in Stratford against Molloy College in a NYCAC conference match up. As the 2003 season begins, many are looking for great things to happen with a young and talented team. With a deep pitching staff and quality hitting and fielding, UB will be looking to make a run to the top of the conference standings.
