SPRING BREAK SAFETY

Finally, spring break; the time we most cherish, the opportunity to relax and take a break from school work. The time to travel, discover new places, the time to enjoy the pleasures of life; the beaches, the carnivals, and the time to part. It’s important, however, to be aware of the precautions that should be taken before traveling, and remember important safety tips.International students traveling outside of the U.S. should make sure they have the necessary documents to ensure their return (an endorsed I-20 or IAP-66, a valid F-1 or J-1 visa, a valid passport and carry out official transcript, proof of financial support, current semester registration, and school ID card). For travel inside the U.S., international students must carry identifying documents and proof of school enrollment.

Safety tips apply to all students leaving the campus for Spring break. Before leaving, you should make sure that a friend staying on campus is aware of your plan. Upon arrival at your destination site, you should make a list of emergency numbers, such as the local police department, hospitals, and other emergency contacts.

The next most important tip is drinking safety. You should know your limits and stick to them. Do not let the ambiance influence your decisions. Girls in particular should be careful when choosing who they will hang out with. It’s always a good idea to be at least in pairs. If you’re drinking in a public bar, you should make sure to always keep your drink in sight and stay around the people you came with. DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE.

In case you are going to a public place, such as a beach, you should be careful with your belongings. Hiding them under the car seat will not save them from robbers. And remember that at anytime, your most valuable belonging is yourself. If you are being attacked, save your body first; any other thing can be replaced.

Armed with these safety tips, anyone should be able to enjoy their spring break. It’s all about having fun and relaxing but it’s also about being safe.
