After growing up in an academic family and graduating from college with a major in Latin, I went to Paris, where for several years I taught English and translated articles for academics. Following shorter stays in Italy and Spain, I returned to the States, enrolling in graduate school and ultimately receiving a Ph.D. degree in comparative literature.
