I have been teaching adult students one-on-one for decades. It is a joy and a delight to me when the student understands the concept. I see teaching as a cooperative relationship. The student's job is to tell me if they don't understand something. My job is to present it in a way that they will understand it. I love the connections that are made between any given topic and the student's cognitive map and life experience.
