Established- May 28th 1936 by the United States Congress
About VFW- The organization has been an instrumental voice in establishing the GI bill for the 20th century, as well as advocators that fight for the compensation for Vietnam veterans that were exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans that have since been diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008 the VFW won a long battle to pass the GI Bill of the 21st century, which was passed. It has also became the first veterans organization to contribute to building the new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November 2010.
Why it's important- Since the VFW consists of 2.1 million members and contributes over 11 million hours of volunteerism in the community. They participate in National Volunteer Week and Make A Difference Day. They also provide $2.5 million in college scholarships and saving bonds for students every year.
