The 24th Student Leadership Awards Ceremony took place on April 22, 2004 at 4pm on the 9th floor of the ABC building (a.k.a. the Tower Room). Dr. Nicholas (a.k.a.) Doc Rock was the Master of Ceremonies, and he did a great job of keeping the crowd entertained and engaged. The Doc started off the ceremony by giving the President, Neil Salonen, a warm welcome and a coconut custard pie. Next, the nominees were called up to the front and recognized. Each nominee was given a flower and a certificate, and a group picture was taken. This year a new record was set, with 33 people nominated for student leadership awards.
After the nominees were recognized, Gabrie Kirkley, the student president, gave a short speech thanking everyone who participated in this year’s Student Government Association (SGA). Then, all the SGA members came up, received a certificate, and shook hands with the incoming SGA members. The new SGA members were sworn in, and then they moved on to the suspenseful part; the student leadership awards.
Each award was presented by a different professor, who read the accomplishments of the award winner without mentioning their name (this was to add to the suspense) until the very end. The award winners were as follows:
Outstanding Involvement by a 1st Year Student: Ely Loew
Outstanding Involvement by a 2ndYear Student: Victor Bowman
Outstanding Involvement by a 3rd Year Student: Kimikame Miyake
Outstanding Involvement by a 4th Year Student: Dusan Bogunovic
Shining Knight Spirit Award: Sarah Osbourne
Community Service Award: Lillie Kirkley
Dean’s Award: Valerie DiClerico
President’s Award: Sana Sarr
Congratulations to the award winners!! And special thanks to our senior winners Sarah, Dusan, and Sana, and good luck in you post-UB life. UB will miss you, and all the seniors, for everything you’ve done.
On a side note, Sodexho provided fattening, delicious cheesecakes, cakes, and desserts, plus plenty of fresh, juicy fruits. After the ceremony everyone stuck around to chat, take pictures, and gain some weight. Overall, it was a wonderful show of UB pride and school spirit.
