SCUBA Poetry Reading

Yet another SCUBA International Poetry event has come and gone. For all of those not in attendance, it was held on Thursday, April 22nd at the
Art Gallery in the ABC building. International Poetry is a night everyone enjoys due to the diverse nature of the event. This is an event that always imparts knowledge to its audience.
The reading of poetry was supposed to begin at 7:15 pm, but had a rocky start and didn’t really begin until 7:45 pm. This was apparently due to poor communication between the upper levels of SCUBA. As an audience member, you can see all members of SCUBA scrambling to get things together. There were also many people clearly upset with this lack of communication.
On to the positives of this event: It was a more intimate setting for the poetry night. Not having such a rigid scheduling allowed for Krishna Pillai, President of SCUBA, to ask for volunteers, as well as those who were scheduled to read. Jimi Baughman read a Korean poem in English and brought her guitar to sing it in Korean. Emily Gunning read a poem written by Malik Church. Many people were impressed by the untitled poem Church had written. Many were unaware that he had it in him.
Even yours truly had to get up and help out, with a poem by Maya Angelou. Professor Lehman, Professor Juliusburger, Professor Romalis and Professor Roxie Ray all read poems at this event. The professors read poems by penned by an Irish man, a Russian poem translated from Spanish, and a Polish poem translated into English, respectively. It was nice to see people not only speak in different languages but also impart knowledge to the audience.
Onto more positives of this event, another of which was refreshments. It is always nice to have free food on a Thursday night. We all eat in Marina. Plus, it gave us all something to do before Afroganza. Lastly, it is true that the students clubs of the University of Bridgeport holds events. See you next year, International Poetry Night.
